Photovoltaic Systems

Solar PV or photovoltaic systems produce electricity when the panels are exposed to sunlight. The cells within the panels generate the electricity by reacting from the energy the sun produces; this is known as solar radiation.

The amount of electricity produced is determined by a number of factors-

  • The rating of the panels
  • The quantity of modules in the system
  • The level of irradiation off the sun
  • The positioning of the panels
  • The operating temperature of the panel

It is often perceived that the amount of electricity being produced is also related to the outside air temperature, for example; that when the temperature increases so does the output of electricity, this however is not the case.

The efficiency of the panels decrease when the surface temperature of the panels increase, in a recent case study it was found a system in Scotland actually produced more energy than an identical system in Spain for this reason.

The average cost of electricity is currently 13p/kwh it has reached this figure increasing 7% per annum over the past decade.

The demand for electricity has increased significantly over the past few years and this rise in energy prices is predicted to continue and rise sharply with reports of up to 60% per annum.

Due to this the financial benefit with PV is currently an excellent investment today however in years to come the returns on your investment will continue to grow from strength to strength.

Environmental Savings

An average 1.8kw PV system can reduce your carbon omissions over 900kg /CO2 per annum. After the system has been installed the system does not produce any harmful omissions. The majority of panels are made from silicone produced using sand, a natural resource which is in no danger of running out.

Feed in Tariff (FIT)

The feed in tariff is a government incentive introduced as part of the renewable heat incentive scheme to encourage people to switch to renewable energy to help the UK meet the 2020 emissions target. The incentive offers a fixed amount detailed below (and is fixed for 25 years) for every unit of electricity the system produces as well as the saving you will make in not having to buy the electricity from the provider.
